Alice in Wonderland, Disney, ****
This marks Danny Elfman’s 12th film score for Tim Burton since their first collaboration in 1985 on Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. From Batman and Edward Scissorshands to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the veteran Hollywood composer and founding member of Oingo Boingo has created elegant, lyrical and knowing themes that perfectly embody the quirkily beautiful worlds of Burton’s films. Bold, bright and brimming with wit, the main Alice theme of his superb new score is easily one of his finest, dynamically fusing a sinuous melody, an exuberant pulse and a playful chorale with idiosyncratic instrumentation and lush orchestration. Alice in Wonderland is vintage Elfman at his most adventurous, combining 21st-century post- minimalism with 19th-century romanticism to produce an exhilarating score for Burton’s newly Bandersnatched Alice.
