Between The LinesEdition ****
Pianist/composer Dave Stapleton names as influences Jarrett's European Quartet, Hancock's Headhunters and classical composers Satie and Ravel. If this fine new album also suggests a sophisticated updating of Messengers' hard bop and a soupçonof Iberian Miles Davis, he is, however, much more than the sum of any influences. The quintet – Stapleton, Ben Waghorn (bass clarinet/tenor/soprano), Jonny Bruce (trumpet), Paula Gardner (bass) and Elliot Bennett (drums) – is a real band, and he writes for their personalities and gifts with an appreciation for the colours they bring to it. The shifting perspectives of Hornand the marvellous Dry White, with the subtle referencing of another theme, October Sky,the processional Socks Firstand the gorgeous Under the Cherry Treeand Images, derive their sense of proportion and unity from his insight and leadership.
