This tenor saxophonist is the son of singer Miriam Klein and trumpeter/guitarist Oscar Klein, who made a superb Billie Holiday tribute ( Ladylike, with Roy Eldridge, Dexter Gordon and Slide Hampton) decades ago. Miriam joins her son on this reissue of an equally fine 2001 tribute to Marilyn Monroe, which benefits from an even better Mulgrew Miller-Ira Coleman-Marcello Pellitteri rhythm section. Her voice uncannily echoes the later Billie Holiday (without the vocal frailties), and her lazily confident, throaty phrasing is particularly effective on the after-hours mood of Kiss, Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friendand She Acts Like a Woman Should.Playing like a contemporary Dexter Gordon, David Klein is impressive as an exceptional quartet shows its qualities on My Heart Belongs to Daddy, Specialisationand I'm Through With Love.The album was a cheesy concept that happily clicked.
