It's not often that you hear of a medical student giving up their career to be a pop star, but that's what Emeli Sandé did when fame came knocking. The Scottish 20-something is somewhat of a buzz artist on the UK's urban scene after collaborations with Professor Green and Tinie Tempah, but her own full-length debut is a mixed bag of soul-pop and r'n'b balladry. Heaven, the fantastic clubby opening track, leaves traces of Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathyin its wake, but too many songs are bulked out with cloying string samples and glossy hi-fi production. Sandé is obviously a big talent, as heard on uncomplicated acoustic track Breaking the Law. It's just a shame that she's started her career with a huge-sounding album instead of an honest- sounding one. emelisande.com
