Unlearn Hardly Art * * *

Hailing from Denton, Texas (the quirky, arty town that Midlake also call home), Andrew Savage and Jason Kelly have slowly crept up on the inside rail with a couple of fine, robust singles that chipped doo-wop, folk-punk and warped rock'n' roll into the mix. Those diverse influences are very much to the fore on Unlearn, a debut album that isn't afraid to take the scenic route now and again. Some will find such diversity a little off-putting, as if the band are deliberately setting out to be eclectic, but it's also an indication that the duo are still finding their feet. All the same, a track such Powerful Lovin'is most definitely a keeper, brimming with positive energy and a strong, fresh garage- blues punch, while Girls With English Accentsand Where the Walls Are Made of Grassalso display much potential.
