MU.ZZ.LE Warp***
2010's A Sufi and a Killerintroduced the world to the psych-desert blues and weird and warped visions of California-born yoga teacher and Flying Lotus cohort Sumach Ecks. Those elements are still in play in what is a much murkier, darker mix, with Ecks ramping up the yelps and throwing more industrial beats into the equation. Instead of bringing in a gang of producers as he did last time around, Ecks holds onto the reins himself throughout. What stands out most on the claustrophobic drag and distorted blur of tracks such as White Picket Fenceand The Blameis Ecks's gritty, rough, growling blast of a voice, which remains something of an acquired taste. It's uneasy listening, to be sure, though you get a sense that Ecks is often being contrary for the sake of it, rather than from any sense of outrage. sufisays.com
