Green Day

Uno! Warners ****

Uno! Warners ****

In a grandiose gesture, Green Day are releasing a trilogy of albums between now and January, thanks to a major creative breakthrough from a band who have straddled both global commercial success and neo-punk rock credibility. Uno! is a tight collection of melodic power pop that references early Beatles and the long-forgotten pop nous of The Knack. Oh Love demonstrates Green Day's admirable ability with a three- minute single, while Kill the DJ (reminiscent of Sandinista-era Clash) is, ironically, a sure-fire radio hit. They regress a bit to frat-boy humour with Let Yourself Go, which is a bit overcooked for its own good, but they shuffle and swagger beautifully on Nuclear Family. There is never a sense here that Green Day have overstretched themselves, and you can only but admire their knack for guitar pop/rock. Not quite back to basics, then, but the collection has a garage-rock sound that feels "demo". Recommended. greenday.com
