Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Disney/EMI ****

After producing three and writing two of the

Pirates

scores, Hans Zimmer takes a different approach for On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the franchise. Collaborating with Mexican folk-rockers Rodrigo Y Gabriela, the composer emphasises thematic improvisation and experimentation, creating dynamic cues with minimal instrumentation (guitars, percussion, violin), warm colours, bright melodies and tango-inspired rhythms - more like jamming than scoring. At once brash and exuberant, the remaining solo cues are signature Zimmer, combining long melodic lines and pounding rhythms with lush orchestration and ethereal chorales that teeter gleefully between the dramatic and the operatic. Included are remixes of several cues, which sound rather perfunctory.
