Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Disney ****

Harry Gregson Williams's new score for über-producer Jerry Bruckheimer's video game- based blockbuster, is one of his finest. With simple themes, spare orchestration and eclectic ethno- electronic instrumentation, the British composer's dynamic music powers along with wit and charm, in contrast to his recent dull and generic scores for The Taking of Pelham 123and Wolverine. This is both playful and serious, as if Gregson Williams had rediscovered that sometimes action movies need a little feeling and humour (his early scores from Smilla's Sense of Snowto Shrekabounded in both), and that themes as well as rhythms make the heart beat faster.
