Held
Tri Angle
****
Holy Other dwells in the shadows. The Manchester-based producer gives little away about his name and identity (to the extent that he wears a shroud when playing live), and the music here is suitably eerie, cosmic and hazy. That approach worked a treat on last year's exceptional With U EP, so it's no surprise Held comes from from similar templates and directions. What's interesting about Holy Other is that despite a plethora of other producers (and chancers) operating in the bass/r'n'b jungle, he still finds connections and hooks that elude everyone else. In the midst of his murky, dense ocean of dusky synths, subterranean noir-bass and banshee vocals, Holy Other pushes a narrative through textures and moods on tracks such as Past Tension, In Difference and the broody moonscapes of Inpouring. It all amounts to a slow-motion, chillingly sublime symphony. soundcloud.com/holyother
