Ioana Petcu-Colan (violin) Limb from Limb ecords LfL 002 **
The obscure saint of Ian Wilson’s 47-minute
Una Santa Oscura
is Hildegard of Bingen, the 12th-century German mystic and abbess whose profile as a composer has developed in recent decades to dwarf those of her contemporaries.
The piece is for solo violin with pre-recorded soundtrack, and is running as a theatrical “multisensory collaboration across disciplines” at Dublin’s Project Arts Centre until tomorrow night. It’s in 13 titled movements that mostly cast the violin in the spotlight. The adaptable Ioana Petcu-Colan handles string writing that engages in a Kronos Quartet-like reach of stylistic embrace against backgrounds that range from the new agey to evocations of mundane domestic tasks. The slightly claustrophobic closeness and muted quality of the recorded violin detract from the disc’s appeal. See url.ie/57cr
