I Know What Love Isn'tSecretly Canadian ***
Where would Jens Lekman be without love? Almost everything that the Swedish indie crooner has written has been based around matters of the heart, but at least his trademark droll, self-deprecating style means that his songs are customarily devoid of cliches. Lekman's third studio album was (unsurprisingly) written in the wake of a failed relationship, but his bumbling soundtrack of piano and guitar makes it as easygoing and pleasurable as anything that's come before. The wordy The World Moves On playfully dabbles in strings and woodwind, while I Want a Pair of Cowboy Boots scales back the instrumentation for a mournful ballad. Lekman may never be "hip" or "current", but this album is further evidence of his unassuming yet considerable songwriting prowess. jenslekman.com
