The music alone on Jim Sullivan's long-forgotten debut would warrant our attention, but the backstory to it is also worth recounting. Sullivan, a singer-songwriter and jobbing actor (he had a small part in Easy Rider), originally released UFOin 1969, on a tiny label, to little acclaim.

Six years later, Sullivan's car was found abandoned in the middle of the New Mexico desert and the singer hasn't been seen or heard from since. Many believe he was abducted by a visiting UFO, something Sullivan, spookily, had covered on his debut album, where he talks about heading out to the desert to wait for aliens to whisk him away. Kooky theories aside, UFOis a fine folk-rock document, all atmospheric airs and graces, with Sullivan's strong, sweet voice threading the beautiful string arrangements and lovely bold, tender melodies together. An album for the cosmic space cowboy in all of us.
