It's a curious thing when musicians' palates are as experimental as this. Sanders is an English guitarist who ricochets between west Kerry and New Zealand, and his latest collection (honouring a revered Indian medicinal tree) is nothing if not eclectic. Jazz, world, folk and traditional coalesce, with Turlough O'Carolan lodged alongside west Kerry polkas and a Jethro Tull-esque Monkey Mind. Sanders's choice of lead instruments (bouzouki and tenor ukelele) make for an intriguing sound, bolstered by light-fingered percussion, double bass, guitar and sundry strings. There's an organic, deliciously weathered quality to the collection that brings a coherence to what is a highly disparate dozen of tunes, with a single vocal tossed in the mix on Inverurie. What strikes most is his subtle but confident compositional skills. A slow- burning delight. See jon-sanders. com
