Named after their grandfather, as well as a homage of sorts to his home town of Joseph, Oregon, Portland sisters Natalie, Allison and Meegan Closner tipped around (odd jobs in bakery and grocery stores for twins Allison and Meegan, playing mostly house gigs for Natalie) until last year when they signed to ATO Records.
Produced by Mike Mogis (one-time house producer with Saddle Creek, erstwhile home to Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, et al), the trio’s debut for the label is harmony heaven for those missing Scandinavian sister act, First Aid Kit (which Mogis has also produced).
If one was cynical, you might describe Joseph as Second Aid Kit, such is the similarity of the sound, but once you get over this you realise just how evocative Joseph’s music is.
Ultimately? Pleasant, but not much more than that.
