Liber Terán, once the irrepressible frontman of the Mexican rebel collective Los de Abajo, has taken his restless musical spirit into new and surprising territory. Drawing on the history of European military bands accompanying the invading armies of 19th-century colonists, he links the traditions of the Sinaloa region of Mexico with East European brass band music to produce an infectious hybrid. From mariachi swing to jaunty ska to full-on Balkan bounce, this is good- time music that wears its roots with humour; the influence of Terán’s early mentor, David Byrne, is well in evidence. Nothing outstays its welcome – nine short tracks and two dispensable remixes only amount to half an hour. An enjoyable outing from the dude in the cowboy hat. See myspace.com/liberteran
