Better known for his collaborations with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Brian Eno and Iarla Ó Lionáird, Canadian guitarist and producer Michael Brook has created some of the most remarkable scores of the last two decades, from Albino Alligatorand Afflictionto The Inconvenient Truthand Into the Wild. Combining long melodic lines and sombre rhythms with his signature infinite guitar and sinuous electronica, Brook's score for boxing film The Fighteremphasises atmosphere over theme to produce a dynamic soundscape that balances dramatic seriousness with expressive intensity. Given the sentimentality of recent boxing scores ( Cinderella Man, Red Canvas), the spare angularity of Brook's unconventional score infuses The Fighterwith power and force – like a sucker punch in slow motion.
