Nine Tales of the Pendulum Jellymould Jazz ****

Waterford bassist Mick Coady has traveled far in search of his own sound. A respected force in Dublin and London for two decades, Coady has played with Louis Stewart, backed visiting Americans, led his own groups, and collaborated with his peers in UK creative hotbed The Loop Collective. And all the time he has been listening and learning, studying jazz and composition, and soaking up African, Brazilian, and Indian influences along the way. His debut recording as leader distills that search into a set of fiery originals, played with conviction by a quintet that bristles with talent, including influential US alto saxophonist David Binney, Irish tenor master Michael Buckely, rising piano star Ivo Neame, and the always creative Seán Carpio on drums. Coady's group begins an extensive tour of Ireland tonight, so take the opportunity to hear them live and pick up the record while you're there. Neither will disappoint. mickcoady.co.uk
