Ur Uair Bhig an Lae/ The Small Hours ***

Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh's solo debut, Fáinne An Lae (2006),set the Danú lead singer and flautist apart as an interpreter of singular ability. Dual, her 2008 duet album with Julie Fowlis, saw her pushing boundaries further. The Small Hours comes with a handful of richly textured interpretations, many songs beloved of her west Kerry home place, bolstered by colourful sleeve notes. Nic Amhlaoibh's decision to excise her fine flute playing disappoints, and some English-language songs (such as The Leaving of Limerick) cleave to a path well worn. However, the Irish-language songs are a joy. Unearthly yet earthy, Nic Amhlaoibh digs deep beneath each song's skin, making it her own. Oisín McAuley's string arrangements add further depth. muireann.ie
