Glass Swords Warp****

Glaswegian producer Russell "Rustie" Whyte is a bass junkie who has turned heads since arriving on the scene via the Lucky Me and Numbers set-ups. Releases to date have seen him zig zag between styles, from booming slo-mo hip-hop to crunky synthelica, without ever losing his way on the swings and roundabouts. Such confidence (and perhaps a touch of cockiness, too) also informs the cut of his Warp debut album, Glass Swords. It's a colourful swirl of high-velocity sonic patterns, each fitting coherently into Whyte's template. What's noticeable when you deconstruct and analyse the essence of each track is how often diverse elements co-exist harmoniously. Rather than ending up with chaotic jams, Whyte's maximalist prog-electronica tendencies turn up such tracks as the thrilling Ultra Thizzand the compelling City Star. The boy has one hell of a vision.
