Brainfeeder is the cabal of producers and music-makers gathered by Flying Lotus, and that maverick has found an adventurous, forward-thinking classicist in Christina McGeehan, who has swapped the electropop frills of her Avant Gold debut album for something entirely different. On Totem, the Los Angeles-based artist messes with electronic templates and textures in an admirably carefree manner. McGeehan's vocals will remind listeners of Björk, but her avant-garde approach to compositional details doesn't use inaccessibility to cloak or disguise her songs. Instead, her voice delivers swathes of emotion over occasionally dark, often shimmering and always alluring bleeps and glitches.
