Shannon hardly needs to prove anything to anyone. Ever since her 1991 debut she's taken the accordion on a picaresque journey of Irish traditional, South American tango, swing, blues, Cajun – a gumbo of her own concoction. This collection features 15 singers, with 10 of the tracks taken from previously recorded material. It's a curious beast, with individual moments of inspiration: Kirsty MacColl's earthy flirtation with Argentinean tango master Ástor Piazzolla on Libertangofits hand in glove with Shannon's expansive playing, and Go Tell the Devilhas Imelda May shimmering in the heat. Overall, however, the whole is less than the sum of the parts. A reggae take on Johnny McEvoy's Muirsheen Durkinnever ignites, and Camille O'Sullivan's burlesque Mama Loufails to find purchase. Shannon's own musical voice is too often lost in the mix. See sharonshannon. com
