BEST COAST
The Only PlaceWichita ***
When it was released in 2010, Best Coast’s Crazy for You sounded like the harbinger of an imminent shoegazing revival. The title track to Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno’s second album is a chirpier and more home-made- sounding affair, like the theme music from a whimsical web-only sitcom starring Zooey Deschanel.
A little annoying, in other words.
HEATHERS
Forget Me Knot***
"They told me when I was younger," recall sisters Ellie and Louise MacNamara, "that lying would leave you blind." That's weird. When I was younger, I was told that something else entirely would make me go blind. And, boy, did I prove them wrong. Yee-haw! youtube.com/heathersdublin
KATY PERRY
Ninjas in Paris (Live on BBC Radio 1) **
“This is about to get real embarrassing,” announces the singer, right at the top. Considering that Perry’s track record includes having whipped cream squirt out of her breasts, penning the puerile Milk, Milk Lemonade, and marrying Russell Brand, it seems wise to take the singer at her word. Perry does not disappoint. This bizarre, PG-13 rendition of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Niggas in Paris is one of the most misguided musical travesties this side of Ronan Keating’s Fairytale of New York.
NO MONSTER CLUB
Be My BoneCF Records ****
No Monster Club’s Bobby Aherne works as a “professional storyteller” in the National Leprechaun Museum by day. Ouch, I bet those Christmas family gatherings just fly by.
TENACIOUS D
To Be the BestSony *
The D hath returned. Jack Black and Kyle Gass’s comeback music video features murder, betrayal and cameo turns by Tim Robbins, Val Kilmer, Dave Grohl, Josh Groban and Jimmy Kimmel. All that’s missing is a song. I don’t mean that facetiously. This is literally six minutes and three seconds of build-up to a song that never materialises.
