EOIN BUTLER's guide to downloads, singles and free audiostreams
WILL.I.AM
This Is LoveInterscope **
The rapper-turned-reality talent judge has returned with a new album called #willpower. Yip, that’s a title that conveniently doubles as a Twitter hashtag, much as will.i.am's pop career to date conveniently doubles as one incredibly long, convincing pitch for a leading role in Zoolander 2. Id.i.ot
ONE DIRECTION
More Than ThisSyco **
The fourth single from Up All Night is so slushy that it practically constitutes a traffic hazard. But, to give One Direction some credit, it is primo slush. I mean, if slow sets existed in 2012, More Than This would probably surpass even Bon Jovi’s Always as a summer dance floor-filler. Hang in there, awkward teenage boys. All that swaying will pay off in the end.
JAIL WEDDINGS
(There's Nothing Worse in the World Than a) Crying GirlNeurotic Yell ****
Taken from Jail Weddings’ Four Future Standards EP, Crying Girl is a a weird, fun trip. Think Scott Walker meets The Darkness. Only slightly weirder.
THE BARLEY MOB
Stand Up, Rise Up, Big Up **
Passable Irish reggae from an outfit destined to spend their career answering questions as varied as "Is that really the band's name?", "No, really?" and "No, seriously?" The Barley Mob will be touring Ireland throughout the summer. itunes.com
SERENA WILLIAMS
Rap Debut *
“Baby, Serena is you really rapping?” Hmm. I guess that would depend on what you understand “rapping” to mean. Hot on the heels of Caroline Woziack’s hilariously ill-advised Oxygen single, the younger Williams sister becomes the second female tennis star in less than a month to turn her hand
to pop music with unintentionally amusing results. In Serena's case, there is apparently an album to follow. If this is the stand-out track for that record then, truly, the mind boggles. youtube.com
