LEONARD COHEN
Show Me the Place
Columbia *****
Kelley Lynch is the woman who allegedly stole millions from Leonard Cohen in the early 2000s. In time, music fans may acknowledge the debut of gratitude we all owe her: were it not for Cohen's financial woes, the 77-year- old maestro probably wouldn't be recording and performing live today. Show Me the Placeis a bruised masterpiece in the vein of Tom Waits's Down There By The Train. We know who we have to thank for it, even if we don't say so out loud.
OF MONTREAL
Wintered Debts
Polyvinyl ***
Staying in that neck of the woods, Of Montreal's 11th album ( Paralytic Stalks) isn't due until next year, but this seven-minute taster posted to their website should do for now. It starts out as bright and bouncy as a Brendan Benson track, but around the four-minute mark morphs into something altogether darker, stranger and more operatic. Think Bohemian Rhapsodyrewritten by Van Dyke Parks. ofmontreal.net
THE HORRORS
Suffragette City ***
Faris Badwin channels his inner Ziggy Stardust on this surprisingly brawny Bowie cover, recorded onto vinyl in one take at London’s Metropolis Studios last month. youtube.com
DRAKE ft LIL’ WAYNE
The Motto
Young Money ****
"I'm 25 sittin' on 25 mill'," boasts the RB star on this digital bonus track from his Take Carealbum. Y'know, the older I get, the less likely it becomes that I'll manage to synchronise my age with the number of mill' I have in the bank. Unless the euro goes down the drain, I suppose.
AZEALIA BANKS
Grand Slam ***
Lyrical gymnastics from the rapper who topped the NME's Cool List 2011. In prestige terms, topping the NME's Cool List is an honor that must rank somewhere between winning Celebrity Rearand Celebrity Mum of the Year. Seriously, who could possibly be in a position to make the call?
