Whether indulging his cricket-loving alter ego or partaking in song-swapping duels with Duke Special, one thing Neil Hannon could never be accused of is laziness. However, Bang Goes The Knighthood, the third album since the Divine Comedy's expectation-defying Regeneration and 10th in total, arouses the suspicion that the Derry native is operating within his comfort zone. That's not to suggest this is a poor album. Far from it. As ever, lyrics are observant, witty and, at times, pack a punch. Down in the Street Belowtackles the theme of marital breakdown with subtlety and empathy while Island Lifeand Assume the Perpendicularare exceedingly lovely affairs, but it's difficult to shake the feeling that Hannon has misplaced his ability to surprise – disappointing when we know he is capable of more.
