Somewhere along the line, this long-running hip-hop saga found a new set of lungs and a renewed sense of urgency. After eight albums that zigzagged from one side of the quality control divide to the other, How I Got Oversees the Philly veterans turn a corner and hit a new stride. You could put this down to quirky new edges (Joanna Newsom samples, Monsters of Folk covers, Dirty Projectors guest spots) or a new lease of life from their gig as house band on Jimmy Fallon, but those are just trimmings. The real joy is in seeing ?uestlove, Black Thought and co knuckle down, push themselves and provide some pumping, feelgood odes to surviving and thriving the hard-knock life. From the dizzy, buzzing slam of Right Onto the top-drawer psychedelic drawl of Tunnel Vision,this is the sound of a crowd with their eyes on the prize.
