Toy Heavenly ****
It's one thing to have access to a smart record collection and quite another to judiciously use what you hear to influence your own music. What London five- piece Toy have taken from their perusal of vintage Krautrock and psych-rock is both a sound and a feeling. When it comes to the former, their debut album is a scintillating, heavyweight thriller, full of colourful riffs, kaleidoscopic atmospheres and intoxicating grooves. But it's Toy's feeling for those previous freak scenes and how this informs the punch and drama of their tunes that is by far the more interesting takeaway here. Colours Running Out, the glorious My Heart Skips a Beat and the hypnotic, hazy Drifting Deeper are earworms of the finest variety, tracks that roar and soar with great, unabashed abandon.
