US indie’s current fondness for nostalgia shows no sign of running out of hazy Polaroid moments, a state of affairs that suits retro dreamer George Lewis Jr. Born in the Dominican Republic, reared in Florida and based in Brooklyn, Lewis is a smart multi-instrumentalist with a distinct flair for new-wave pop airs and graces, last spotted in full flourish during the 1980s. Aided by the subtle laid-back production gear-changing of Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor,
Lewis mines sassy melodies
from a gallery of echoey drum- machines, old-fashioned swabs of guitar, synth stabs and his own distinctive, rich croon, as if he’s riffing through Echo the Bunnymen, Police and early Depeche Mode C90s. But Lewis’s songs are robust enough for any stylistic rig-out, with both Tyrant Destroyed and When We Were Dancing jumping out at the listener. His 1990s album should be a blast.
