Fourth Time AroundSelf-Released ***
Cork roots band Two Time Polka are obviously in it for the long haul. Maybe it helps that the outfit is something of a family business, with the husband-and- wife team of Ray (mandolin) and Geraldine Barron (accordion) providing the spine for this sextet with a Cajun heart. For their fourth album, the band explore the "blues side of the Cajun songbook" while giving a platform for four of singer Aaron Dillon's own songs. These range from recession-inspired Brown Envelope and The Economy to the raucous Ain't Goin' to Church, the latter one of four "live" tracks tacked on to the 11 studio recordings. While these songs have value, particularly the Pete Seeger-like The Economy, they dilute the impact of the band's core Cajun and Zydeco sound, although Wafus Two Step and Pine Grove Blues restate's Two Time Polka's credentials with some vigour. The old timey Moonshiner's Daughter and a delightful waltz, Chez Seychelles, offer further detours, albeit satisfying ones. twotimepolka.com
