ElectrospectiveEMI ***
Any review of this retrospective of electronic music's assorted ins and outs since 1958 needs to acknowledge the vast bulk of material on this double-CD is from EMI's back catalogue. This explains why there's nothing here to represent any of the plethora of pioneering indie labels like Warp or artists like Aphex Twin and Burial (to stick to the As and Bs) and tells us why it features Eric Prydz, David Guetta, Deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia instead. Such caveats aside, Electrospective is a succinct document of how electronic music's stylish changes, redos and embellishments influenced pop since Delia Derbyshire was at work in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. From the exotic roll of Telex and Brian Eno to the technofied punch and pounce of Daft Punk, Massive Attack and the Chemical Brothers, this covers enough to entice some casual listeners to perhaps take a closer, deeper look. electrospective.com
