Blue Valentine Lakeshore ***

The original plan was for Grizzly Bear to score Derek Cianfrance's bitter-sweet romantic drama using brand new songs, but shifting deadlines meant the band ran out of time. Instead, the soundtrack is made up of a bunch of previously released Grizzly Bear tunes, lots of instrumental versions of those tunes, a track from GB offshoot Department of Eagles (In Ear Park)and a brace of standalone curios. The latter are the movie's star, Ryan Gosling, doing an excellent ukulele version of You Always Hurt the Ones You Love(as seen in the film), and You Me, a beautiful laidback 1970s soul-shaker from Penny The Quarters, of whom almost nothing is known. Otherwise, it's a bit of a Grizzly Bear Greatest Hits grab-bag, with tunes from Veckatimestand Yellow House, though the choral version of Alligatoris probably the pick of the bunch.
