Genre: World Music
Label: Soul Jazz

It comes as no surprise that Soul Jazz has returned so quickly to Nigeria to rummage again in the crates for the makings of another compilation.

While Freedom Sounds from earlier this year took its cue from the music of the early 1960s after the country won its independence from Britain, Soul Fever focuses on the following decade and the abundance of disco, Afro-funk and boogie which was coming on strong across the country.

Even though the political mood had turned sour after the civil war and military coup in the late 1960s, the only message here is: “move your feet”, with acts like Don Bruce & The Angels, Tee Mac, Christy Essien, Angela Starr and many more honing and crafting infectious, heady and dancefloor-ready grooves.

This a rare excursion into the giddiness of west African hedonism of the time.
