The so-called “nice lady with a dirty voice” gets the Jack White treatment and survives with reputation enhanced. This covers collection artfully references Wanda Jackson’s many strengths and the genres she has passed through. Jackson is a big- haired, diminutive, 73-year- old, God-fearing Oklahoma- born pensioner. She is also considered the “queen of rockabilly”, that raucous 1950s fusion of black r’n’b and white country. Jack White, who has previous form resurrecting legends (2004’s collaboration with Loretta Lynn), coaxes surprisingly powerful performances from Jackson, who is not intimidated by the wall of sound in which he immerses her.
