Pianist/composer Wolfert Brederode, Claudio Puntin (clarinets), Mats Eilertsen (bass) and Samuel Rohrer (drums) each have multiple connections within the ECM "family", but their time together since their 2006 debut, Currents, has given their musical relationship a seamless intimacy. Melody-centred, but using colour and texture, they can create a mood or paint a sound picture with lyrical conviction. If Brederode's writing, exquisite touch and refined imagination and Puntin's classical timbre are distinguishing marks, the ensemble's unique collective voice owes as much to Eilertsen's and Rohrer's abilities as colourists and timekeepers.
