If there’s a classic case of a young band looking at the ground to check which direction it should take, then the debut album from Galway five-piece indie/folk types Amazing Apples is it.
First track, On Your Own, sounds like they have been listening to Kodaline and Delorentos, while the likes of Lullaby, Hiding Place, Where He Fell and Jack and Jill sound exactly like a band whose self-proclaimed influences include Mumford and Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Dubliners and The Waterboys (the latter's influence most notable on World Without End and Skins).
There’s a trace of latterday Horslips in there, too, and while it’s all moderately enjoyable (grand, like) there’s an underlying sense that if there isn’t more rigorous material in the band’s bag of tricks then the juice in these here apples will soon dry up.
