They’re no novelty act, but Autoban are gaining a reputation for putting on gigs that are slightly out of the ordinary.

Last December, the indie trio staged a Mad Hatter’s Ball as a fundraiser for the recording of their new EP – a gig that involved patrons modelling an obligatory piece of headgear of their choosing. Tomorrow night, they’ll be taking to the stage of Dublin’s Crown Alley (formerly Eamon Doran’s) to play a Lonely Hearts gig featuring a set of Beatles songs as well as some of their own music.

“There seems to be a bit of stigma attached to original artists playing covers when, historically, that’s how some of the best bands in the world started,” said frontman Darren Hardiman. “We’re not a covers band obviously, but these are songs we loved when we started writing music – so why not do it as a one-off night for people to enjoy?” Support comes from Neon Hearts, and admission includes a goodie bag with a CD and other treats.
