Bang the Beat #6

Featuring Pessoas Que Eu Conheço, Tames, Lumigraph, Prostitutes, Tobias and Paul Birken

Lumigraph: a tougher techno edge

PESSOAS QUE EU CONHEÇO UMA CARTA DE AMOR PARA SEGA 001 (40% Foda/Maneirissimo)
Some laidback, slightly lo-fi techno from Brazil, courtesy of the always reliable 40% Foda crew. A snaking 303 line winds through this one, lending some bite to track with an otherwise sunny disposition.

TAMES VIVID ELEMENTS (Galdoors)
Beautiful arp work and delicate percussion work combine on this new one from the Galdoors label. There's just a hint of rollage going on, with an unhurried groove swinging just enough to get feet moving.

LUMIGRAPH SKULL BONE (Odd Frequencies)
New one from the Dublin producer, now resident in New York. Skull Bone has a tougher techno edge than some previous work, cranking its way into a heady collage of rough drums, Drexciyan synth work and bubbly bass.

PROSTITUTES SUCK OUT THE REASON (Spectrum Spools)
Though it's fair to say Jim Donadio's Prostitutes started out with as much noise as techno in its make-up, this track marks a clear progression towards pure rhythmic invention. With its spare and dangerously swung breaks, this could almost be a Livity Sound release. Almost.

TOBIAS IF (Ostgut Ton)
Probably better known for production work on other people's records than for his own music, Tobias Freund's new album, A Series Of Shocks , should change that. A strange, eerie track this, with hints of Reznor-ish dread hanging heavy all the way through.

PAUL BIRKEN ACID YOUTH OF MALIBU (TRUSS REMIX) (Earwiggle)
Going out on a high this month with some absolutely smashing party techno from a Paul Birken remix EP on Sunil Sharpe's Earwiggle label. No airs or graces here – and the same can be said for Blawan and Bas Mooy's respective contributions.
