The Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962) was an avid collector and arranger of folk music, and his choral arrangements have an attractive cleanness and simplicity. Kreek's Notebook by Tõnu Kõrvits (born 1969) is a 2007 homage, revisiting folk material with a frequent twinkle in the eye while garlanding it with unexpected and appealing decorations. Kõrvits's The night is darkening around me is closer to the sound world of Michael McGlynn's Anúna. The other works recorded here, Arturs Maskats's Lacrimosa and Lugums naktij, and Peteris Plakidis's In memoriam and Fatamorgana, resort to altogether more well-worn choral techniques. Rupert Gough ensures that the music is delivered with always effective polish by the Choir of Royal Holloway. url.ie/4qdb
