You could think of organists as the pandas of the musical world. Playing in churches week in, week out, they have a large repertoire to trawl through (centuries longer than that of the piano) to maintain the high output that is demanded of them. And yet many an organ recital is quite predictable in the choices it makes.
David Adams, who brings this year’s organ recital series to a close on Sunday, is a player who consistently treats his instrument’s breadth of repertoire as something to be celebrated. On Sunday this musical adventurer has chosen to intersperse music by Bach, Mozart and Frescobaldi with less familiar works by Wolf-Günter Leidel, Charles Valentin Alkan, Hermann Rinck, Anton Heiller and Franz Schmidt.
Later in the week, at Christ Church Cathedral, Monica Huggett (above) and the Irish Baroque Orchestra begin
their new season with one of the greatest of musical masterpieces in a form which you might never have expected to hear it: violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations for strings.
