NCH, Dublin Tonight 8pm €10-€35 01-4170000
It looks like a perfectly ordinary concert from the RTÉ NSO. There are three works from the heart of the repertoire: Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony. The soloist is the orchestra’s principal clarinettist, John Finucane, and the conductor is Venezuelan Rafael Payare (above), who at the age of 32 who won the Malko Competition in Copenhagen last May.
But it’s actually a concert with a difference – the orchestra will include some unfamiliar faces as the 10 young players selected for the RTÉ NSO Mentoring Scheme 2012 will take to the stage with their professional colleagues.
This year’s line-up includes two violinists (Anne Manach and Cristina Ryan), a cellist (Yseult Cooper Stockdale), a flautist (Liane Bradley), a trumpeter (Eoghan Cooke), a tuba player (Stephen Crooks), a horn player (Aisling Deevy), two percussionists (Ronan Dikker and Brian Dungan), and a harpist (Claire O’Donnell).
