Good backstory: Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards first met at a LA needlework class and formed Deap Vally out of a mutual love of guitar-based music. And not just any old guitar-based music, but the metallic blues of Black Keys and White Stripes – that scuzzy, snarling mix of nostril-dilating sex and the kind of blues/rock that gets toes stepped on. Produced by Lars Stalfors of Mars Volta, Troy (vocals/guitar) and Edwards (drums) show little sign of ever holding back on songs as raucous as End of the World, Gonna Make My Own Money, Women of Intention, Creeplife and Lies. While there's not a huge degree of variation here (think an overall sonic palette of White Stripes as fronted by Peaches or Janis Joplin), there's no doubting that this garage rock smells of sweat, grease, nuts, bolts and screws. deapvally.com
