Tony Kearns. Title: An Eye For The Music - exploring the role of photography in Irish Traditional Music

Kearns is a photographer who has taken galleries of photographs of notable musicians, including documenting events such as the Willie Clancy summer school in Miltown Malbay since the 1990s. Tonight he’s the guest of Na Píobairí Uilleann’s monthly lecture and performance series where he’ll share anecdotes and archival photographs of some of the greater and lesser-known musicians who have wended their way to west Clare for the most unmissable pilgrimage on the traditional music calendar.

The eclecticism of this year’s Sligo Live programme promises to be a magnet for a diverse audience. From piper Leonard Barry who with Declan Folan and Shane McGowan will be celebrating the launch of their fine new album, Hurry the Jug, to the sublime fiddle player, Kevin Burke, a veteran of The Bothy Band, Patrick Street and so many other fine ensembles, this is a bespoke gathering with chutzpah. Other guests include The Kilfenora Céilí Band, the Blindboy Podcast, and the Jools Holland R & B Orchestra, and much more.

Scottish harp genius, Catriona McKay will perform on the eve of National Harp Day in the Múscraí Gaeltacht alongside Deirdre Granville and the Kerry Harp Ensemble. Also joining them for the evening is Cork-based harp ensemble, Glissando. For harp aficionados it’s a rich gathering and a life-giving infusion.

Louth folkies shape up to release their second album, three years after the release of their debut, False Deceiver. Tonight, they are joined by the irrepressible Dónal Lunny on bouzouki and guitar. Supported by Alfi, a fresh new trio combining American old-time and traditional Irish music.

Whistle player Cormac Breatnach is joined by poets Theo Dorgan and Keith Payne, and musicians Jaime Muñoz, Carlos Beceiro and Cormac de Barra for a celebration of the life and work of the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Honouring the links between Lorca and JM Synge, whose Riders to the Sea was influential on Lorca’s work, as well as the late Limerick poet Michael Hartnett, this afternoon’s concert will feature new translations of the poets’ work along with newly composed music and Spanish folk tunes.
