This collection is a singular delight. Eithne Ní Uallacháin (of Lá Lúgh) left a rich legacy of both traditional and original music in her wake, following her untimely death in 1999. Bilingua encapsulates her vivid vocals, her exceptional phrasing and her finely wrought compositions, but it does so much more than that too. It’s a beautifully produced snapshot of Eithne Ní Uallacháin’s potent energy.
Taking both fully formed recordings and those still in chrysalis form when she passed away, her husband, Gerry O’Connor, and son, Dónal O’Connor have struck a fine balance between the celebratory rhythms of the title song (with the sublime Mario n’Goma on percussion), the sacred tone of Eithne’s Latin composition ‘Senex Puer’, and the multicoloured layers that enwrap her light-filled reading of ‘I Am Stretched On Your Grave’, among so much more. The remarkable timelessness of this exceptional collection will introduce a whole new audience for Eithne’s music.
