The fact that Guerilla Toss have taken up new recording digs for their latest album hasn’t made any difference to how they approach the business at hand.
As on a series of well-received releases to date on other labels, the New York avant-garde punks show a wild approach to sound. On this album, tracks take the oddball, weirdbeard, off-kilter route every time, making for an album full of fury, mischief and menace. Frontwoman Kassie Carlson is a spirited star turn, her streams of consciousness topping off the band's squalls of tough percussion, edgy guitars and thumping bass.
Grass Shack is a killer thriller, twisting and turning with intent. Elsewhere, shorter, sharper shocks, such as Multibeast TV and Big Brick, rip various no-wave tenets to shreds to create the kind of mood swings that are always an exciting listen.
