When it premiered in London in 1733, Orlando was spectacular production involving the supernatural and scenes that required wind and thunder machines.
This recording by Rene Jacobs points up the opera’s theatrical aspects, and sparkles with dramatic energy.
Orlando, an unstable anti-hero, is one of Handel’s most demanding roles, and was the last written by the composer for the famous castrato Senesino.
Here it is superbly delivered by the countertenor Bejun Mehta, who meets all the complex demands of the role with ease. Sophie Karthauser, in addition, is particularly impressive as Angelica.
