Writing about a soundtrack without seeing the movie can be frustrating as each performance is constructed as part of a greater whole. But Irish audiences won't be seeing Inside Llewyn Davis until late January, and we only know only generally what role these tracks play in the telling of the Coen brothers' tale of a New York folk singer in 1961. That said, longtime Coens partner T Bone Burnett curates this 14-track essay with his customary knowledge, taste and skill. The songlist will be familiar to seasoned folkies, though invariably Irish attention has focused on an oddly refined version of Brendan Behan's Auld Triangle, which features, among others, Justin Timberlake and Marcus Mumford. Oscar Isaac, who plays the title role, delivers a number of impressive tracks, not least the opening Hang Me, Oh Hang Me. insidellewyndavis.com
