When selecting songs for a new Late Night Tales compilation, composer Nils Frahm chose from an eclectic range that references, as he says, "a nice journey for your mind and heart".
No surprise there, as Frahm is no slouch at steering a steady path through wonderful, delicate soundscapes. Bookended musically by a "cover version" of John Cage's 4'33" and Frahm's own Them, the album is a mix of sublime (Miles Davis's Concierto de Aranjuez), unsettling (Colin Stetson's The Righteous Wrath of an Honorable Man), dreamy (Bibio's It Was Willow), spooky (Victor Silvester's Talk of the Town), and intriguing (Nina Simone's cover of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes). It finishes brilliantly with Cillian Murphy's reading Enda Walsh's unsettling short story, In the Morning. latenighttales.co.uk
