It is only when the initial hype around a band evaporates that you sense a real measure of what's important. When everybody was extolling the virtues of Little Green Cars' 2013 debut album Absolute Zero, they did what smart bands do: shut out needless chatter and got on with writing new material.

Three years to the month of Absolute Zero's release comes its follow-up, Ephemera, and the changes are remarkable. As new songs were written, so circumstances changed – a band member's father died, other members' personal relationships fragmented – and so traumas are at the root of the lyrics.

That the 12 songs sound like the most harmonious you’ll likely hear all year, however, is testament to the energy that has gone into them.

Fear, loathing, remorse and anguish have rarely sounded so joyful.
