There’s a fascinating spirit powering British jazz at the moment and you can see it in the prowess of acts like Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, Polar Bear and the thrilling Melt Yourself Down.

The latter’s 2013 debut was a giddy, wide-eyed run and the follow-up sways and swings with similar abandon. Here’s a band happy to take their cues from jazz, post-punk, Arabic sounds, hip-hop and future funk and then come up with something brand new.

The playing throughout is masterful, tracks like Jump the Fire and Dot to Dot enhanced by how the players, marshalled by Acoustic Ladyland and Polar Bear saxophonist Pete Wareham, who unpick and repack the rhythms to amplify the cut and thrust of the groove. Add in the mystical utterances of Kushal Gaya and you've got one hell of an album to embrace and enjoy. meltyourselfdown.com
